Republican Agenda in Making

This seems to be emerging. And it is rather close to home. It is the menace of Islamic Law in the United States.
See this article in the New York Times.
Two dozen states are thinking of discouraging Judges from consulting Shariah.
That is half of the states in the US of A.
Let us get it right.
You discourage somebody who is either encouraged or is motivated.
It means that Judges in USA, at least half of it, consult Shariah.
And it could be more states-it must be because above figure is for those states who want to restrict their Judges.
So in all probability whole of USA is consulting Shariah.
Now that one should call a revelation.
A tribute to the Fuqaha of Islam-their hard work stands acknowledged by the greatest power seen by the history.
This also means another thing. Whenever Shariah is talked in west they try to present the things in such a way that the audience will think that Islam just borrowed the Roman Law and started calling it Shariah.
The aim is clear-to wear away people from Shariah. Why implement a thing in life if it is just a poor imitation of something else?
But behind the scene something else was happening. They have been consulting Shariah.

And all praise is for Allah Most High for that.

Of course the Republican agenda in the making will oppose it all. Wait and watch.

What Is God Particle?

Answer : There is no such thing.
Nobel Prize winner physicist Leon Lederman used this phrase for Higgs particle and majority of physics community will disapprove of this choice-in fact many have disapproved it. This includes above FAQ on Higgs. The author of above FAQ hints about blasphemy in above nomenclature. This is true from science point of view as well as Islam.

Since there is an Alig also in the fray for Higgs it will not be inappropriate to revise that connection. Dr Afsar Abbas, Visiting Professor at the Physics Department of your Alma Mater contends that Higgs will not be observed. This is extremely minority view but that is what he says. In the majority view non-observation of Higgs is a disaster scenario.

Don't Panic!

This is the phrase used in the Higgs FAQ page by Mathew Strassler that we have linked in the previous post.
Some of you might have seen it at another places also. For example the famous book The C++ Programming Language by the creator of  C++ language Bjarne Stoustrup uses it early in his book.

So that is it. That is life. At the present moment the things in the business of acquiring knowledge have become so difficult that even real experts, including creators of new fields, feel that the audience might panic.

I hope this much of excerpts should suffice us to use the same phrase. This blog is meant to explain these things, and that is the object of it all, but sometimes it is bound to look very tedious or difficult. But do not panic. Things should start making sense at some point of time.

Higgs FAQ

Those who are extremely late to wake up, and there are students always as well as one should be prepared to meet novices in gentry that is covered by Aligarh Movement, FAQ stands for Frequently Asked Questions.
Every filed has a FAQ and a new comer should always try to cover them quickly-no body honours ignorance.

Coming back to the topic of the post. We have been talking about Higgs.
So here is a FAQ on Higgs.

If you feel that this is mumbo jumbo then please dig-in your heels. Life is no more simple and sooner or later you have to face it as it is. We Aligs indulge enough in self praise but reality has its own rules of operating. For matters related to particle physics the blog, a new one, where above FAQ has appeared in a very good one to get connected with.

What Is Arxiv?

This is a electronic server invented/designed/written by Paul Ginsparg, a string theorist, in 1991.
Before that scientific results were circulated and shared among physics community using preprints. These were stencil and later photocopies of the original draft mailed to reputed institutions as well as selected individuals and were available on request too. But results will take some time to reach the audience. In the meantime the usual peer reviewing of the paper used to be under progress and the paper will appear in print much later. Old stories of scientific developments speak of delays of many months before a result from Europe will reach India or other parts of the world.

Situation changed in August 1991 when Ginsparg's xxx.lanl.gov archive system came into action. The communication was using email and was nearly instantaneous. Once you decided that your results are in a presentable form you send you manuscript to the archive and next morning everybody will get to see it.

It solved another problem. Many journals do not allow even the original authors to use their papers because of automatic copy right transfer. Majority of the scientists in physical fields are irked with this kind of restriction. The papers that are available at archive can be used by everybody at any time.

Here is the main archive site, the trendy spelling is arxiv, now at Cornell University.
Here is the article that triggered the present post.
Here is another article that gives a perspective similar to above post but much wider one.

Here are the papers there at the arxiv by an Indian superstar in the same field as Paul Ginsparg.
Here are the papers there by an Iranian superstar, at Harvard University, in the same field.
Here are the papers in the same field by the world superstar of the field, from USA.

She Doesn't Like It

Hina Rabbani Khar visited India.
The media covered the event.
And focused on her looks.
May Allah Most High forgive your poor Alig for reporting this.
And the media focused on her fashion.
She has a taste for the expansive-does not allow money to be distraction when it comes to it.
When she landed back home the media there focused on the focus that was in India-her fashion.
She did not like it.
Truth some time bites.
Pakistan is in a bad state.
So are the Pakistanis.
Except a few. And they are shamelessly oblivious to it.
Classic case of people unfit to rule.
Just like the people in our courtyard.
And then there is one thing that no body is pointing out.
That is shaking hand with some one who is not your mehram.
Islam taken as a religion of convenience.

What narrow minded person you are.

Ek din marna hai,
Aakhir maut hai.

One we have to die,
Finally death is there.

And then we have to account for our actions.

Quote of the Day(July 30, 2011)

Pamela Geller is a terrible bigot because she believes that Islam is an intrinsically evil system, and that everyone who adheres to this system is intrinsically evil.

Prominent Economist

You must be a prominent economist if you teach economics at Harvard.
Like Subramanian Swamy.
He is also former Union Minister of Government of India.
He is also president of Janata Party.
He is also promiscuous-politically speaking.
So why is he news?
He proposed solution to Islamic terrorism. See here.
But his Islamophobia is not a news to Muslims in India.
The twist this time is that Harvard people have woken up to his professorship at Harvard not being compatible with his ideology.
They do not want him to teach there. See this petition.
Interesting situation.
Harvard has a problem at hands.

Salam AMU Doctors

Muslim family shares nation's grief in Norway. (Al-Jazeerah via London Muslim via Islam in Europe).
Of course the family in news too lost a precious life.
And then we have India and Muslims in India, say, in our beloved Alma Mater.
Sharing pain of the nation is a way of life here-particularly in the medical field.
Once your poor Alig was far away and there was a very devastating train accident ( most probably near Firozabad). Since it was in the same geographical region the thought came to to mind that AMU doctors should reach there to offer their services.
And next day's newspapers told it in black and white that our medicos were in situ-at the accident site.
And that was not an exception or a one time patriotic gesture.
It has been a regular observation that these energetic professional are among the first once to respond to medical crisis of disaster level.
So dear doctors, I mean, respected doctors you fill the hearts with warmth.
You are an inspiration.
Salam to you.

The cloud that will arise from here shall rain on the whole world.

What Happened To Aligarh Network?

Aligarh Network used to be a vibrant discussion group of Aligs on Yahoo Groups.
It has disappered now. How? Why?
The questions are rhetoric only because we have not enabled the comments to the blog.
No this poor Alig, this sinner is not missing it. No disrespect to the respective moderators. You were putting in lots of work-it is appreciated. The point is that there are still too many Alig Groups to manage a regular browsing. What about starting your respective blogs dear Aligs? You can avoid all the bickering that is going on the groups because you'll be too busy in maintaining your blog to indulge in any act response unless it is very urgent.
So there-at the most two discussion groups and as many Alig blogs as you want.

The cloud that will arise from here shall rain on the whole world.

Come On Aligs

It is true that the most viewed post here at An Alig's Armchair is about a prototype of and Alig, that is, our late beloved Miyan. But look at the most viewed gadget on the right panel of the blog and you'll see that the second most viewed post is the one that was posted very recently and it is not about an Alig! And it was a borrowed post-just to rub the salt on the wounds. So what are dear Aligs doing? Come on go for it!

Populationally Speaking

2005 Figures in Millions
China                     1308
India                       1103
USA                         298
Indonesia                  223
Brazil                       186
Pakistan                   158
Russia Bangladesh    142
Nigeria                      131

(Based on Wikipedia)
Muslim population of India, with very conservative and official looking estimates, for the same period will be around 190 millions-above not only Pakistan but Brazil too.

What a shame it is that this group makes negligible contributions to world civilization-in fact it can not even take care of itself. No wonder that present Minister of State for Foreign Affairs E.Ahmed had, nearly a decade ago had taunted during his AMU visit that the great leaders of Muslims of India after independence have been Pt Jawahar Lal Nehru, Indira Gandhi, VP Singh and Mulayam Singh.

Dr Liaqat Ali, Bhubaneswar

Since we are honoured by one visitor from Orissa it triggers lots of memories of that Land of Utkal, Odisha, Kalinga. Too numerous to encompass. In fact overwhelming. So what to talk about? We'll take up, to say few words about, Dr Liaqat Ali. He is currently Secretary, Orissa Urdu Academy. Yes-that is it. The language that has been systematically killed in its birthplace has some life there. As expected the Urdu has its own accent there. Oh those sweet words! Some of the speakers are gone some are there by the grace of Lord Most Hugh. (Talking of personal experience and not the status of the language Urdu in Orissa.) Dr Liaqat Ali got his Ph.D. in Chemistry at AMU and has served as Director of Education and other capacities in Bhubaneswar. He is an Alig to the core and an active one-keeps working on keeping the Alig connection alive there in Orissa. Love and respect Liaqat Sahab-you are an inspiration.

Professor Jamal Khwaja

Here is his home page.
More professional home page then the home page of Computer Science Department.
A philosopher, former parliamentarian and a man with family deeply interwoven into Indian National Congress.
He has written many books.
One day he came to meet Miyan.
This should be taken as a gesture of honour and kindness towards Miyan-a professor, even if retired, visiting him.
But this requires some explanation. Professors (and hence Readers and Lecturers) visiting Miyan was a routine thing. But there was a rub too. Most of these visitors visted because of non-academic reasons. Miyan had a complain that intelligentsia of Aligarh will never accept him as an intellectual. In a sense he was right. In fact he was right to a very large extent. There were not many people who measured up to his level in  in many academic matters-particularly Aligarh Movement. Many times, because of the problems associated with Minority Character of the university, it so happened that people will end up with him-no one had his perspective. But they never gave him credit for all the input he gave. That is life. Some bricks simply go into the foundation and disappear.

And hence the honour when a real academician turns up at the door of Miyan's room in Old Boys Lodge.
Professor Khwaja was disturbed. This was after his retirement ( and settlement in Shimla, as Miyan later told). The matter was academic. How could Mujaddid-e-Alf-e-Sani Shaikh Ahmed Sirhindi (RA) claim that he has reached the Qaiyoom state? To boot a person to whom Khwaja Sahab had presented his objections rejected them. How can people not accept the truth-he was outraged.

Anecdote over. Here is what a friend from Sunni Forum Dr76 says about Qaiyoom state. Italicization of non-English words and parenthetical words were inserted by your poor Alig.

.I told him see.. the whole alam is a mazhar of Tajalliyat e ilahi.. now someone has to be tajalliyat e sifaat mazhar..he is known as the ‘qayyum ‘ in isteyla of tasawwuf.. like when the sun draws close to a river .. the river absorbs its heat and gets hot.. but it never becomes the sun.. nor the sun becomes the river.. so in a limited frame a human imbibes the divine sifaat.. yet remains abd in the strictest sense..

Got it? If yes you are ahead of the personality of this post. And guess what. If you do not understand above then you are after him. Actually it is a win-win situation.

Mourning Maulana Yunus Patel (RA)

The Closing of a Chapter
A brief biography of Moulana Yunus Patel (Rahimahullah)
Muhammad Badsha
The passing away of Hazrat Moulana Yunus Patel (rahimahullah) in the precincts of the Ka’bah in Makkah Mukarramah on 12 July 2011 heralds the closing of a unique chapter in the history of Islam in South Africa. An Aalim who had a hand in most of the different works of Islam in the country at some point or the other, Moulana Yunus Patel (rahimahullah) is acknowledged by Muslims across the spectrum in South Africa as a great personality. This write-up merely serves to highlight a few aspects from his life and cannot do justice to the many facets of half a century of unparalleled service to Islam. There could be mistakes in the facts written here and ask that any corrections be forwarded to us. Many facts are missing and will be made public as and when they come to light.

Moulana was born in 1946 in Stanger, KwaZulu Natal, South Africa. He did his primary schooling and, in 1962 as a youngster he volunteered to be in the first Tabligh Jamaat with Haji Bhai Padia (rahimahullah) in Grey Street Musjid, Durban. He used to go in the initial Tabligh Jamaats that used to work in South Africa.

Moulana used to also go with his uncle, Chota Mota Desai (rahimahullah), the author of Taleemul Haq, to the indigenous areas and Moulana recounts that numerous people accepted Islam at their hands.

In the early 1960’s Moulana went to Darul Uloom Deoband in India as one of the early group of youth from South Africa, to study the Aalim course. Moulana was an outstanding student and also a confidante of many of his illustrious teachers.

On returning to South Africa around 1969, Moulana served the community of Mooi River as Imam and teacher. He went there despite being offered more lucrative posts in Transvaal because there was not a single Aalim between Pietermaritzburg and Newcastle. Moulana recounted to us how he used to hitchhike with his wife and baby from Mooi River to Stanger to visit his parents. He lived in a tin shanty home in Mooi River. The notes on Fiqh that he made while there formed the basis of the famous manual of Islam for Maktabs, the Taleemul Haq.

Moulana used to take many students up to Mia’s farm with Chota Mota (Haji Shabier Ahmed) rahimahullah to study Hifz and the Aalim course, laying the foundation of generations of Ulama and Huffaaz who served Islam in South Africa. Moulana was also involved in the discussions when the first Darul Uloom in South Africa in Newcastle was set up.

After four years, around 1973, Moulana moved to Durban and was instrumental in establishing the first offices of the Jamiatul Ulama Natal. For many years Moulana served the community under the Jamiat, later becoming the secretary general and president.

At the Jamiat, Moulana was at the forefront of establishing and laying the foundation of the different activities of community service, including the supervision of Halaal and the setting up of an Iftaa department. In fact, Mufti Ebrahim Desai, a senior Mufti whose Fatwas number in the thousands and are followed around the world, states that his taking up of the post initially at the Jamiatul Ulama in 1993 was at the encouragement of Moulana Yunus Patel (rahimahullah).

During the famous Qadiani Dispute in Cape Town in the early 1980’s, Moulana was part of the team of expert Ulama who prepared the required expert evidence required in the court case to defend the Prophet (sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) and Ahlus Sunnah wal Jamaah.

Moulana established the first girls’ Madrasah in Asherville, Durban in 1982. It is now a flourishing institute.

Moulana served as the Imam of Musjidun Noor in Asherville, Durban for many years until his demise.

In recent years, Moulana strove for the unity of the Ulama and went out of his way to harmonize relations between them.

Moulana is the author of several books and his lectures and writings are available on his website.

Moulana traveled to many countries like USA, UK, France, Mauritius, Reunion, Kenya, Bangladesh, Saudi Arabia and southern Africa, as well as around South Africa, preaching Islam.

Moulana also had regular programs on local Muslim radio stations like Radio Al Ansaar, Channel Islam International and Radio Islam International. Through this and audio streaming from his website, Moulana touched the lives of thousands of people locally and internationally.

Moulana was granted Khilafah in spiritual reformation from Mufti Mahmoodul Hassan Gangohi (rahimahullah) and Moulana Hakeem Muhammad Akhtar Saheb. The last decade of Moulana’s life saw an emphasis of spiritual reformation of the community and hundreds of people became his adherents.

Moulana loved the Harams of Makkah Mukarramah and Madinah Muawwarah and visited them many times for Umrah and Hajj.

Humility

As an indication of his extreme humility, Moulana used to tell me when I asked for his biography, that his life story could be fitted on the back of a postage stamp! Nothing could be further from the truth.

It was the great good fortune of Port Elizabeth that Moulana’s daughter and her family settled in Port Elizabeth. This brought Moulana, who had great love for his family, to our city many a times. Moulana used to not give the Ulama a chance to come and visit him first as he used to go and visit the junior and senior Ulama alike at their homes and places of work. The Ulama of Port Elizabeth benefited tremendously from Moulana’s advices especially with regards to setting up the Council of Ulama Eastern Cape.

Moulana generally did not like to have a program prepared in advance in Port Elizabeth. His talks, announced late, drew good crowds for the city. A unique feature was that the audience always consisted of a large percentage of Ulama.

Moulana loved the poor and once, on a visit to Port Elizabeth, I pointed out to him a poor student from one of the countries in Africa who sacrificed a lot to come and study Islam. Moulana called him aside in secret and gave him some money.

On one occasion, the maid of Moulana’s landlord needed to go to hospital to deliver her baby in the middle of the night. When the landlord refused, Moulana, together with his wife, took the maid to hospital and waited for her to be discharged before bringing her back home.

Moulana practically demonstrated the Islamic teachings of anti-racism and many a person from a different race group was won over by his impartial respect that he showed to one and all.

Piety

Anyone who saw Moulana for even a little while would be impressed by Moulana’s adherence to the Sunnah and wonderful character. His granddaughter mentioned that in the months in which she lived with him, Moulana never once expressed anger towards his wife.

Moulana recounted that all his maids who worked for him over the years accepted Islam, with three months being the most time required.

Moulana lived a very simple, frugal life. He was accessible to people from all walks of life at all times.

Death

The death of Moulana was an indication of his love for the holy cities of Makkah Mukarramah and Madinah Munawwarah. Moulana performed Tawaaf, read Maghrib Salaah and experienced a heart attack in front of the Ka’bah in the Mataaf area. He breathed his last in the Haram. His Janazah Salaah was performed by Sheikh Shuraim at the Ka’bah. Moulana was buried in Jannatul Mualla, the blessed graveyard of Makkah Mukarramah, where Hazrat Khadijah (radhiallahu anha) is buried. This is extraordinary in itself as foreigners are not normally buried here.

Moulana was 65 when he passed away. He had two daughters and a son.

Moulana was not only a fountain of knowledge, wisdom and piety, he was also a pillar of strength for all, Ulama especially. I personally know many Ulama who relied on Moulana’s advices and support to continue their service of Islam. In fact, while the Muslims of South Africa in general feel at a loss on the demise of Moulana Yunus Patel (rahimahullah), it is the Ulama who feel totally orphaned. Moulana had a knack of encouraging Ulama and directing them to better service of Islam. He was the confidante of the innermost feelings of many an Aalim.

The adoration of his followers is a reminder of how the Sahaabah adored the Prophet (sallallahu alaihi wa sallam). The sadness and shock at the news of his passing makes one think of how the demise of the Prophet (sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) affected those who loved him, the Sahaabah.

He guided even the biggest sinner with a marvelous hand of wisdom.

The Prophet (sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) said: ‘Allah does not take away the knowledge by taking it away from (the hearts of the) people, but takes it away by the death of the religious learned men till when none of the (religious learned men) remains, people will take as their leaders ignorant persons who when consulted will give their verdict without knowledge. So they will go astray and will lead the people astray.’ (Bukhari 1:32)

‘This saint with Madinah Muawwarah’s love at heart,
His praises we cannot fulfill; merely start.
His character a reflection of he (sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) who lies,
Under the green dome, beneath Arabia’s skies.’
(From: An Ode to Moulana Yunus Patel rahimahullah)

We make dua with a sore heart that Allah Ta’ala unite us with Moulana Yunus Patel (rahimahullah) in Paradise and we can enjoy his blessed, graceful company once again, in the presence of his and our beloved Prophet Muhammad (sallallahu alaihi wa sallam).

The Muslims of South Africa, from all their ranks and files, salute a man who gave his life to preserving and promoting Islam in this country. Many generations and a large portion of the Muslims of this country owe their adherence to Islam to this noble personality, this humble saint, this embodiment of living Islam. He evokes feelings in his bereft followers and those who loved and knew him that no king or president can even aspire to.

American Psychiatrists and Psychologists

Alias people disconnected with reality.
Evidence : Calling religion a mental disease. Case Closed.
And, if you are left unconvinced, see how gullible they are-somebody fooled them about unnatural acts of intimacy.
A Manifestation : Hell Breaking Loose on Remarks by Ghulam Nabi Azad.

This community that, as expected, got the minister to retract very quickly must be very powerful. Surprising thing is that this community must obviously be very minute. Compare it with a significant minority called Muslims-who are completely insignificant when it comes to their issues in social, political, cultural and economic spheres of life in our country.

Damage to Islam and Muslims

Who has done more damage to Islam and Muslims-erstwhile USSR or USA?
We can not answer this question at the moment.
The reason is two fold.
Firstly the damage by the US of A is still continuing and any stock taking, while a worthwhile academic exercise, will be only temporary. (No offense meant to the people who are suffering.)
Secondly we do not have an objective assessment of the damage done by the erstwhile USSR.
We have some hints about the latter in the following sources.

Longest Bridges

Here is a collection of photographs of longest bridges (1,2,3,4)..

The question is have we thanked our Lord Most High for this all? Or is it going straight to our brain?
